Smoke In Train Tunnel Between BK And Manhattan Prompts Delays: MTA

BROOKLYN, NY — A train tunnel connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan filled with smoke during rush hour commute Wednesday, prompting a series of delays amid a fire department investigation, officials said. The MTA first reported about 8:50 a.m., at which point service on the red line devolved into chaos — some 2 trains started running on the 5 line while others ran on the 1 line, and 1, 2 and 3 trains saw system-wide delays, the MTA posted on Twitter. During this time, first responders at the fire department rushed to investigate the cause of the smoke, according to the MTA. Shortly later, about 9:10 a.m., the FDNY finished its investigation and trains started moving again, but delays remain, the MTA said. The FDNY did not immediately respond to Patch's inquiry as to what the cause of smoke was. About an hour after the incident was first reported, 2 trains have started making usual stops in Manhattan, but delays persist on the 1, 2 and 3 lines, according to the MTA service status website.
