Drunken Woman Drove Into Oncoming Traffic In Commack: Police

COMMACK, NY — A woman was charged with DWI after she drove her SUV into oncoming traffic in Commack on Wednesday morning, Suffolk police said. Susan Charan, 51, of Hicksville, was driving her Ford Expedition eastbound in the westbound lanes of Jericho Turnpike at 12:50 a.m., police said. An officer in a marked police car found the Ford and drove up behind it with lights and siren activated, but Charan kept driving, police said. The officer then passed the Ford and positioned his cruiser in front of it, police said. The officer gradually slowed down his cruiser until it came to a stop with the Ford stopping behind it, police said. The officer found that Charan was intoxicated, police said. Charan was charged with driving while intoxicated. She was also issued multiple summonses for traffic violations. The Ford was impounded. Charan is being held at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
