NEW HAVEN, CT —A 29-year-old New Haven man has been charged federally for being a felon in possession of a firearm, prosecutors said. U. S. Attorney for Connecticut Vanessa Roberts Avery announced Tuesday that a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging Shaquil Gary. He entered a plea of not guilty in a New Haven federal courtroom, per Avery. As alleged in the indictment, Avery said, on April 19, Gary had a loaded Glock model 17, 9mm pistol. His criminal history includes a federal felony conviction for armed robbery and state felony convictions for the sale and possession of narcotics, federal prosecutors noted. It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison. Currently on federal supervised release, he faces additional penalties if he is found to have violated the conditions of his supervised release, Avery said. The ATF, and New Haven and Hamden police departments investigated the case.
