MANCHESTER, CT — A truck carrying produce to the Manchester Walmart crashed late Tuesday night and left thousands of dollars worth of vegetables on Buckland Hills Drive, police said. The box truck, registered to Northern Valley Farms, Inc. out of Granby, was heading east on the curve near the entrance to 345 Buckland Hills Drive, police said. According to a crash report, the driver said he lost control of the truck as it began to tilt. When he attempted to correct it, the truck struck a curb, overturned, and came to a rest on its passenger side, according to a crash report. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, but the box truck sustained heavy damage and about $12,000 of zucchini and other squash spilled onto the road, according to a crash report. Damage to the truck was estimated at $10,000, according to a crash report. The truck driver was initially trapped in the cab of the truck, but was rescued with minor injuries and taken to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, police said. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was notified and responded to the scene for a fuel leak, police said. The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection was also at the scene because of the produce spill. Buckland Hills Drive was closed for some time for cleanup, but was open to normal traffic Wednesday morning, police said.
