Description
ANNANDALE, VA — A weekend house fire in Annandale was caused by a set of outdoor string lights, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
Shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to a house fire in the 3900 block of Terrace Drive in Annandale.
Once on scene, firefighters said a one-story, single-family home had fire visible from the rear.
Before firefighters arrived, one person inside the house woke up, discovered the fire and notified the others.
Firefighters said smoke alarms had been disabled due to missing batteries.
As crews worked to extinguish the fire, they also helped seven people inside the home get out.
One person did suffer minor injuries but refused treatment, firefighters said.
Fire investigators said they determined the fire was accidental and started on the exterior deck due to an "electrical event" involving outdoor string lights.
The Red Cross is assisting the people displaced by the house fire.
Firefighters estimated the damage to the house to be around $125,000.
