PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Several communities across Prince George's County will be hosting Juneteenth celebrations starting Friday. The city of Bowie will host a movie night under the stars to kick off a weekend-long Juneteenth Celebration starting June 17 at dusk, or around 9 p.m. The movie Hidden Figures will be shown at Allen Pond so bring food, a blanket or chairs to enjoy the movie and come early for a game of trivia. The Coalition of African Americans in the Performing Arts will present The Road to Jubilee!: A Juneteenth Celebration at the amphitheater at Allen Pond Park Saturday starting at 2 p.m. This musical extravaganza will feature singers, an African drummer, pianist, dancer and narrator that weaves history and hope. Hear poetry from local artists, too. This event is open to all ages; feel free to bring a blanket, chairs and food, organizers recommend. There will be a raffle for giveaways, also. Wake up June 19 and meet at Centennial Park next to city hall for a sunrise walk and workout at 7 a.m. At 9 a.m. the Capital Region Cycling Network will host a Juneteenth/Father's Day bike event featuring a 20- or 45-mile bike ride for skilled riders starting at Allen Pond. Also Sunday at noon, the Bowie Police Department invites fathers and families to join them in a Father's Day celebration.There will be food, vendors, entertainment, games, music and a tribute to dads. This event will take place at Allen Pond Park until 6 p.m. Sunday at 7 p.m., enjoy the reggae sounds of Proverbs Band as they kick off Bowie's Summer Concert Series at Allen Pond Park with a Juneteenth celebration. Juneteenth at the Library The Prince George's County Memorial Library System will commemorate the Juneteenth holiday with a series of events for all ages. Curated by the library's Black History and Culture Team, Prince Georgians can explore their creativity, local community and the legacy of Juneteenth. "In Freedom's Name," a featured exhibit about the history of Black Marylanders' military service, is on display during branch hours at the Spauldings Branch Library through June 28. It is on view at the Oxon Hill Branch Library between June 30 and July 26. The exhibit features 38 panels that include 63 major stories and 245 photographs and images. It explores the stories of Marylanders and Prince Georgians whose courage and service are an inspiration for young people and adults alike. Parks and Rec 2022 Festival for Juneteenth The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George's County, part of the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, will host 2022 Festival for Juneteenth Saturday at Watkins Regional Park from 12 – 5 p.m. and includes: Live entertainment – Kindred the Family Soul, EU featuring Sugar Bear, Coyoba Dance Theater, Prince George's Police Department Band, A Tribute to Maze Featuring the BRENCORE AllstarsVisual art exhibition - Stained Glass by Arvid LeeHistory activities – Freedom cabin, History scavenger huntFood and merchandise vendorsNon-profit exhibitors Fort Washington Juneteenth Event On Sunday will be the Fort Washington Juneteenth event starting at noon. There will be face painting, a community mural that everyone can help with, history tellings, local artists, a STEM workshop for kids, arts and crafts, vendors, pony rides and a 1-mile peace walk. During the guided peace walk, participants will learn about the history of Juneteenth. The walks start at 12:30 p.m. and will be offered every half hour until the final walk at 4:30 p.m. Painting of the community mural in honor of Juneteenth will be led by local artist and business owner Jordan Shackelford from The Blank Canvus. Supplies will be donated by Fort Washington Paint.
