A building that may have served as shelter for people experiencing homelessness has burned. Also, the moratorium on the construction of single-family homes in a West LB neighborhood continues. Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach: On Tuesday at around 2:40 p.m., the LBFD responded to a structure fire in a "vacant, single story commercial building with heavy smoke showing throughout the structure." Located on the 200 block of East 10th Street, the fire was knocked down by 3:02 p.m. Officials say that the building may have been "inhabited by persons experiencing homelessness." There were no injuries. (LBFD)The single-family home moratorium for the "Willow Street and Santa Fe Avenue corridors west of the 710 Freeway in West Long Beach" continues. On Tuesday, the City Council voted to extend it, which affects "building and construction permits for stand-alone residential projects." Officials are looking at zoning code updates and ways to attract "neighborhood-serving businesses." (LBC Meeting Notes) Last month, the Metro Board of Directors killed its $6 billion 710 Freeway widening project. On Tuesday, we learned that the City of Long Beach is not done looking for ways to improve congestion at interchanges that could have benefited from the project. At a cost of about $500 million, "city traffic engineers will work with CalTrans to determine the full need and scope of those improvements." (LB Business Journal) FREE Moonlight Movies on the Beach are back! In addition to the Granada Beach site, there will now be secondary sites at the LBCC Carson Street and PCH campuses.
