47 Cats Found In Car During Twin Cities' Extreme Heat: AHS

TWIN CITIES METRO — Agents with the Animal Humane Society say they removed 47 cats from a car during Tuesday's extreme heat in the Twin Cities metro area. The car was parked at a rest stop near Harris and someone called the police to the scene. Temperatures in the Minneapolis area rose to nearly 100 degrees Tuesday. AHS workers also arrived after the Chisago County Sheriff's Office and Minnesota State Patrol officers requested their help. All 47 cats were released to AHS by their owner, who had been living with them in the vehicle "for some time," AHS said in a news release. The owner was treated by paramedics. Fourteen other cats from the same vehicle were released to a local rescue organization prior to Tuesday's incident. The cats have "only minor medical issues" despite the extreme heat and unsanitary conditions of the car, AHS said. The cats ranged in age from less than a year to over 12 years old. The cats will be evaluated and treated by veterinary staff. After that, they will be sterilized and made available for adoption through AHS or one of its local rescue partners. The AHS said it employs full-time humane agents and investigators "to provide non-judgmental aid and support whenever possible."
