ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst residents should expect to hear more train horns and experience minor delays if they plan to ride on the Metra UP-West Line. Metra announced it started replacing around 90,000 ties between Chicago and Elburn on June 8. The project is expected to last through the end of September. "Tie replacement is essential and must be done at regular intervals to maintain track speed and service levels," Metra CEO Jim Derwinski said in a statement. " We understand that any delays can represent an inconvenience to our riders but focusing the work on off-peak hours should minimize these impacts." Metra is implementing a construction schedule for non-rush hour trains to accommodate travel times through work zones. However, rush hour trains may still be impacted because of the need to reduce speeds through work zones. And since work will be done around the clock, residents near the UP-West line may hear more frequent train horns throughout the daytime and nighttime as federal law requires trains to sound their horns when entering a work zone regardless of a town's quiet zone regulations.
