BOLINGBROOK, IL — The distinguished cadets and instructors of Air Force Junior ROTC IL-091 at Bolingbrook High School earned an overall unit assessment score of Exceeds Standards during their unit evaluation in April, the district said in a news release. This rating is the highest rating attainable.
The district said the unit's instructor, Master Sergeant Tim Sinnaeve (Ret.), has created a dynamic and supportive learning environment, coupled with an excellent community outreach program.
The Bolingbrook High School unit was founded in 1975, the school said. The unit's cadet leaders have raised the standard for the unit, by planning, organizing, and executing eleven co-curricular activities after school. These activities include: four STEM-based leadership development activities, such as Rocketry and Model Aircraft Clubs, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Club, and an Academic Bowl team.
Of special note is the unit's Kitty Hawk Air Society, which is AFJROTC's cadet academic honor society, the school said. This team of 53 cadets is highly active, providing tutoring to the entire school to promote academic excellence, as well as serving their community and school through food drives, hygiene drives, blood drives, reading to kids, and providing cadet corps morale events.
Kitty Hawk cadets complete 69% of the unit's community service hours, which surpassed 1,900 hours in the recently completed school year, the school said.
