Description

What is LIMC?The Long Island Musicians Collective is an initiative spearheaded by Phil Smith (leader of The 90’s Band) and Bryce Larsen (American Idol contestant, bandleader and solo artist) with the goal of bringing gigging musicians together to discuss the craft, the business and the life through organized in-person events. Event DetailsThe second event on Wednesday, June 29th, at 7pm at The Nags Head Ale House in Huntington, will be a loosely guided networking opportunity focused group discussion on the relationship between performers and the various contacts at venues, followed by an open-ended jam session. Schedule:7 PM: Mingle with other musicians, with Bryce and Phil will be loosely guiding a networking session. Meet new people and catch up with old friends. Maybe you'll find that bandmate you've been looking for!8 PM: Small Group Guided Discussion on topics within Understanding the Performer/Venue Dynamic. Working in randomized groups, we will learn from the experiences of others, share our own thoughts, and periodically come back together to discuss the bigger topics.9 PM: Open jam! Probably the most important part of the event, we’ll get a chance to share our art and get to know eachother’s style. The combos that happened at LIMC1 were magic!More Info: The music industry and the service industry are deeply linked, and similar in many ways. It’s importnt to get an idea for how the people you are working with view the transaction, in order to better understand your value to them and your role in the interaction. A firm grasp of this dynamic will also help you present your own strengths in the best possible way. We’ll be attacking the following questions through guided small group discussions, and opportunities to share with the whole group: What does a venue consider when hiring live music? How do you build meaningful connection with someone you are doing business with? What is the best way to communicate your needs to a venue contact? How do you introduce yourself to new venues? The audition process goes both ways, how should you decide if a venue is right for you? What factors go into determining your rate? How should you deal with a “middle man” like an agent? The format will include randomized small group discussions on the various topics, with opportunities to hear from experts and LIMC members along the way.
