PEABODY, MA — A public forum on the proposed extension of the Peabody Independence Greenway will be held virtually on June 22. The state Department of Transportation will host the forum designed to provide the public with more information on the proposed project, its impact and its potential expense to city residents. The project would extend the Independence Greenway from the North Shore Mall to the Warren Street/Endicott Street intersection in central Peabody. The 1.3-mile extension would provide for a dedicated and protected 10-foot-wide multiuse path for walking, hiking and other outdoor activities. The project will include signage for a North Shore Road crossing to the Boston and Maine railroad right-of-way along Proctor Brook, and additional work and structures to minimize wetland impacts. The Independence Greenway is planned to eventually be part of a Border to Boston trail. The state DOT said the city of Peabody will be responsible for acquiring all needed rights-of-way and easements in public and private lands with the land acquisitions being part of the June 22 discussion.
