PRINCETON, NJ — Traffic on Chambers Street Princeton has been one-way for a while now. So many residents were left wondering why the council introduced an ordinance to enforce traffic direction on the street During Monday's meeting. As Deputy Administrator Deanna Stockton explained: the current approval for one-way traffic operation is only temporary in nature, hence the need for the ordinance. "It's my understanding that the temporary one-way operation that was approved is only valid for 90 days. So, we need to follow up with an ordinance to be able to enforce the one-way operation," Stockton said. Councilman David Cohen assured residents that the Municipality has "no intention of keeping Chambers Street one way permanently." Traffic on Chambers Street will be one-way only for the duration of the hotel construction, which is now expected to be completed in 20 months instead of the initial 24-month period. In March, developers told Council that after an on-site examination they determined the road was not broad enough for two-way traffic. They explained that after putting up construction scaffolding and other barriers, the travel lane would not be enough for two-way traffic.
