EL MONTE, CA — Two El Monte Police Department officers responding to a domestic violence report were shot and killed along with a suspect at a motel in El Monte Tuesday evening, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. The shooting occurred shortly after 5 p.m., and both officers were rushed to L.A. County-USC Medical Center where they were pronounced dead. The officers were killed in the line of duty less than 24 hours after a California Highway Patrol officer was shot repeatedly in Los Angeles. The El Monte police officers were called to THE Siesta Inn the area of Garvey Avenue and Central Avenue, near the San Bernardino (10) Freeway to respond to a report of a domestic disturbance. According to city officials, the pair were fired upon instantly. A law enforcement source told the Los Angeles Times the officers were shot at close range when they knocked on a motel room door, and the suspect fired on them through the door. The suspect was also shot and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County sheriff's Department and El Monte officials. A body could be seen covered by a sheet at the shooting scene. Neither the suspect nor the officers were immediately identified. Community leaders issued a joint statement from the City, the El Monte Police Department, and the El Monte Police Officers Association emphasizing the shock and sadness felt across the region. "There are no words to describe our grief and devastation by this senseless act as we learned about the passing of two of our police officers," the statement reads. "It weighs heavy on our hearts and we are sending our support to their families. We would also like to thank the El Monte community and our surrounding government agencies for the outpouring support we have received in the last few hours." Police and sheriff's deputies swarmed the area of the shooting and appeared to be searching the motel. Another suspect also appeared to be in custody in a patrol vehicle on the scene, but no further details were immediately available. The shooting comes one day after a California Highway Patrol officer was shot multiple times during a traffic stop in Studio City.
