PEMBROKE PINES, FL — A child has died after police said a woman mistakenly fired a gun inside a Florida home. According to the Pembroke Police Department, the shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday near 180th Avenue and SW 12th Street in the Coconut Reef community — which is about 45 minutes from Miami. Police said a woman was handling a gun inside her home when it discharged and fatally struck a boy. "Both individuals are family members. The firearm was discharged unintentionally due to negligence and mishandling," police said in a news release. Police said the child was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital by Pembroke Pines Fire-Rescue and died despite all life-saving efforts. Police said charges will be forwarded to the State Attorney's Office after they finish the investigation.
