Description
NEWTOWN, CT — A large group of gun violence prevention advocates took part in the Newtown March for Our Lives event Saturday as part of a national youth-led movement.
Newtown is approaching the 10th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which left 20 children and six educators dead in December 2012.
More than 400 events took place across the country Saturday, with the largest event held in Washington, D.C.
On Sunday, U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) announced a tentative gun control framework that has enough support to pass the Senate. The bill includes funding to help states pass red flag laws that allow law enforcement to temporarily take weapons from people who pose a danger to themselves or others.
It also includes mental health and school safety funding, federal laws against gun trafficking and straw purchasing and enhanced background checks for anyone under 21 who wants to purchase a weapon.
