MILFORD - On Thursday, June 9th, the Junior Woman's Club of Milford presented Christopher Ruano and Brigid Sawitsky each with $1,500 scholarships for their continued education. The scholarships are awarded annually to high school seniors who have shown exemplary academics and devotion to the Milford community. Christopher is a senior at Hopkins School and will attend Harvard in the fall. He is an Eagle Scout who created a native plant pollinator garden for the Connecticut Audobon at Milford Point. The creation will enhance the space for years with no upkeep required. Chris is very passionate about advocating for curricular reform for schools across the state, working to incorporate more primary source-driven resources into history classrooms; especially those in underrepresented groups. In the future, Chris plans to merge his interests in policy and education and hopes to make change through larger policy shifts that can have a potential ripple effect for future generations. Brigid is a senior at Foran High School and will attend the University of Maine in the fall. Brigid combined her passion for gardening and growing foods into her community service. Brigid sought out a food pantry that allowed perishables and unpacked food. Not only did she grow and deliver fresh vegetables to the Naugatuck food pantry, she also helped cook meals and personally delivered packages. Her future plans include studying plant genetics in order to help farmers in Maine learn to adapt to climate change and ensure their future livelihood. The Junior Woman's Club of Milford is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded on the principles of promoting education, public health, philanthropy and service to the Milford community. Our programs include the Citywide Spelling Bee, Community Excellence Award, Adopt-A-Spot, and the Respect Campaign. We'd like to thank Mattie's Service Center for contributing to our scholarship fund this year.
