NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A good teacher can make a lasting impression on a student. A New Rochelle English teacher made such an impact in one student's academic life that the pupil was inspired to nominate her mentor for the William Roberts Charitable Foundation Outstanding Teaching Award. The Monmouth University School of Education honored New Rochelle High School teacher, Ana Ferreira at its 17th annual William Roberts Charitable Foundation Outstanding Teaching Awards dinner on May 25. Ferreira was honored, along with two teachers from New Jersey, for her outstanding teaching accomplishments. Each of the teachers were nominated by a Monmouth University senior for their outstanding teaching proficiences and dedication to education. Ferreira has been an English teacher at New Rochelle High School for the last 15 years, and also taught at Westchester Community College in Valhalla. She speaks English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German, and is the advisor for the Portuguese Club, the German Club and the Sophomore Club. Ferreira graduated with her bachelor's and master's degrees in English and German from the University of Aveiro in Portugal, and earned a Master of Science in English Education from Manhattanville College in Purchase. "My goal as an educator is to make sure that every student comes to class and leaves with a lifelong experience, along with a relationship that they build with each other and me," said Ferreira. "The interactions that happen in my classroom help to build the reading lives of my students. Teaching is truly a rewarding profession." Ferreira was nominated by her former student Jenna Cordaro. "Mrs. Ferreira was more than just a teacher," said Cordaro. "She cared about her students' success inside and outside of the classroom and she went above and beyond to ensure that each student was excelling in her class. The Monmouth University - William Roberts Charitable Foundation Outstanding Teaching Award was started in 2006 by Life Trustee William Roberts to recognize outstanding secondary school teachers who have made an important contribution to the education of current Monmouth University students.
