WOODBRIDGE, VA — A 10-month-old girl died after an SUV hit her in Woodbridge on Sunday afternoon, according to the Prince William County Police Department. Authorities said the girl fell out of the SUV before it rolled forward and hit her. Authorities said that no other injuries were reported in the crash. The police department has not publicly released the name of the 10-month-old girl due to a Virginia law that protects the identities of children. Authorities identified the driver of the SUV as a 35-year-old woman from Hyattsville, Maryland. The police department said the woman was the child's mother. On Monday morning, the police department said no charges had been filed against the woman. The crash occurred around 1 p.m. on Sunday near Flotilla Way and Dyers Mill Court in Woodbridge. The driver of a 2013 Toyota Highlander was visiting family in the area, authorities said. The driver's 10-month-old daughter was left unrestrained in the SUV's backseat while the woman drove to a dumpster and returned to a townhouse in the 16600 block of Flotilla Way, investigators said. When a family member opened the SUV's back door, the child fell out of the vehicle and into the roadway, police said. The driver got out of the SUV to check on the child. But the SUV's transmission was still in drive when the driver got out of vehicle, according to the police report. The SUV rolled forward and hit the child. The child suffered a serious head injury, and her mother drove her to a nearby hospital for treatment. The child died as a result of her injuries later in the day, authorities said.
