SALEM, MA — Salem police charged three juveniles with making threatening calls after a day of prank 9-1-1 calls Friday that included a threat to stage a shooting attack at Collins Middle School.
Salem police said that threat was among the more than 20 calls they received during the day Friday and into early Saturday morning. Police said the callers threatened various violent acts and taunted police.
Police said because of the call volume several of the calls had to be rerouted to the Marblehead Police Department.
Salem police determined the calls were placed from a deactivated cell phone still capable of making the 9-1-1 calls. They said they were able to narrow the location from where the calls were being made to a small area and tracked down the three Salem juveniles suspected of making them at about 2 a.m. Saturday morning.
"The Salem Police Department takes any threats directed against our schools and our school children seriously and criminal behavior such as the anonymous 9-1-1 calls will be thoroughly investigated," police said.
While police deemed the school shooting threat "not credible" there were extra patrols at all Salem Public Schools on Friday "due to an abundance of caution."
