Eco-printing refers to the art of creating clear impressions of plants onto fiber, using the natural colors produced by the plant itself. Join textile and fiber artist Elana Bloom of Solstice Studio in this beginner-level plant-dye workshop, where we will learn the natural dye technique of eco-printing on plant-based fiber. Each student will create their own fat quarter of cotton and several pieces of paper printed with leaves commonly found in Southern Arizona with the use of a simple homemade iron mordant.
The workshop will cover the following:
Introduction to natural dye plants useful for eco-printing in Southern Arizona
Introduction to iron mordanting cellulose (plant) fibers
Introduction to the differences between protein and cellulose fibers
How to safely steam and extract color from plants on a stovetop
Participants will make a fat quarter of fabric of their own to take home, as much paper as desired, along with instructions for how to do simple natural dye projects on their own. This is a safe environment to explore your creativity and get to know the wonderful flora we are so blessed to have access to here in the Sonoran Desert.
