RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — Do you have worn or unserviceable American flags in need of disposal?
The City of Rancho Santa Margarita is hosting its annual Flag Day Retirement Ceremony on Tuesday and residents are invited to save the date and join in on this time-honored event.
The event is an opportunity to honor the American Flag in partnership with American Legion Post 862, VFW Post 6024 and local Scout units, the city said in a statement. At the ceremony, old and unserviceable American flags will be burned in accordance with the United States Flag Code.
"As a revered symbol of freedom and justice, the flag of the United States of America needs to be treated with the utmost respect. This respect extends to the flag's eventual retirement and destruction," the code reads.
Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for seating, as well as any worn or damaged American flags to be disposed of.
Rancho Santa Margarita residents can also drop off flags through June in the flag box located in the lobby of the Bell Tower Regional Community Center, the city said.

The Flag Day Retirement Ceremony event takes place Tuesday from 7:40 p.m. to 8:20 p.m. on the lawn behind Rancho Santa Margarita City Hall, 22112 El Paseo.
