Press release from the Long Beach Unified School District: June 10, 2022 U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten joined California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia and Long Beach Unified School District Superintendent Jill A. Baker during a recent visit to Renaissance High School for the Arts. Marten and the local officials joined LGBTQ+ students for a roundtable to discuss Pride Month and the support needed by LGBTQ+ students. Afterward, the officials hosted a press gathering to discuss what they heard. The officials then toured the school and visited classrooms. Marten said she had an "impactful conversation with some very wise students." "They started with what Renaissance High School is doing right," Marten said, "and how they have classroom experiences and teachers and wellness centers that are very affirming, and they feel very safe, and they feel like they can learn and thrive and grow." Superintendent Baker noted that LGBTQ student voices are central to LBUSD's work to provide equitable education to all students.
