Description
The Coastal Commission and Darien Men's Association volunteers now have the town's 2022 water sampling season in full swing! Pre-dawn, twice monthly from May to October, the team will use the Darien Boat Club's launch boat to sample water and record the key factors of ecologically healthy waters: water temperature, salinity, nitrogen, water clarity, chlorophyll a and dissolved oxygen. This is the sixth year of Darien's program and the effort focuses on the water quality in Darien Harbor, Cove Harbor and the Scott/Zeigler/Fish Island area.
The latest sampling outing was undertaken by Commissioners Bill Cavers and Julie Jones, and DMA volunteers Vincent Arguimbau and Robert McMullan. Conditions were near perfect for the 5:30 AM start - no wind and glass-like water! Some of the findings puzzled us: Oxygen levels were unusually low at some sampling sites for this time of year. We'll check conditions again shortly.
Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses! To learn more about our local water quality, go to https://soundhealthexplorer.org.
