Press release from Shreve Memorial Library: June 9, 2022 Shreve Memorial Library Genealogy Department presents "Cleo Barnwell: Shreveport Gardener's Affair with Flowers" on Thursday, June 16. The public is encouraged to come and hear the biographical sketch of Shreveport native Cleo Barnwell and her love for flowers during the presentation. The program will take place at 2:00 p.m. in the meeting room at the Broadmoor Branch, located at 1212 Captain Shreve Drive. Cleo Barnwell was a founding member of the American Rose Society. Her interest in wildflowers and gardening led to her work with the Shreveport Beautification Foundation and the planning of the Barnwell Center, now the Shreveport Aquarium. In addition, Barnwell was an avid reader and became a popular book reviewer for several women's clubs throughout the area. Her knowledge and experience with plants and flowers led to a friendship with Louisiana author and naturalist, Caroline Dorman, and many other aspiring gardeners throughout the region. Shreve Memorial Library Genealogy Department's Wil Peters will facilitate the presentation and discussion of Cleo Barnwell's life. The program is free and open to the public, and registration is not required to attend. This press release was produced by Shreve Memorial Library. The views expressed here are the author's own.
