OAK LAWN, IL — A Cook County judge ordered a father accused of shaking his 8-week-old daughter to death to be held without bail. Edward Janiszewski, 37, of Oak Lawn, appeared Thursday before Judge Donald Havis on a first-degree murder charge. Charges were upgraded from aggravated child abuse to first-degree murder, when the Cook County Medical Examiner ruled the death of 8-week-old Adaline Janiszewski a homicide, saying she suffered injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome. Autopsy results revealed that the baby died from craniocerebral injuries. The baby had been in an out of Advocate Children's for treatment of a stomach ailment over Memorial Day weekend. Oak Lawn police said Janiszewski admitted to shaking and slamming the baby's head on a cushion when she wouldn't stop crying during the early morning hours of May 30. Janiszewski was charged with aggravated battery of a child June 4, and was free on $7,500 bond at the time of his arrest. His attorney, Michael Kula, told the judge that Janiszewski had been staying with a relative and knew the charges would be upgraded. He said Janiszewski turned himself in Wednesday morning at the Oak Lawn police station after learning the medical examiner ruled the baby's death a homicide. If convicted, the father faces up to 20 to 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Janiszewski's next court hearing is July 1 in Bridgeview.
