Description

One of the most popular forms of instrumental music in the Baroque period was the concerto. There were two distinct forms of the concerto; the concerto grosso for many solo instrumentalists and the solo concerto that featured one principal soloist supported by (some say pitted against) the orchestra. This concert will feature two famous concerti grossi and three solo concertos of diverse instruments. The two concerti grossi include one of the most famous concertos from any period, the wonderful Concerto No. 3 in G by Johann Sebastian Bach. The other concerto grosso comes from Georg Frideric Handel's first collection of concerti, his opus 3, sometimes known as the oboe concerti. There are two oboes included in the ensemble with one oboe featured in an extended solo in one of the movements. The other concerti include one of the most famous viola concertos every written by Georg Phillip Telemann, a rare concerto for oboe d'amore by Telemann and a cello concerto by Georg Matthias Monn.
