In this dynamic presentation, Eric Mindling discusses a great walkabout, magical realism, elderhood, roasted grasshoppers, the history of Mesoamérica in ten minutes or less and the genesis of the creation of an award-winning body of photography that stands as the largest visual collection in existence of the spectacularly diverse people of Oaxaca, Mexico, and their community fashion.
The talk will draw on the 2-year photo documentary work done to create the book, Oaxaca Stories in Cloth. This thoughtful, humorous and insightful talk takes us into the deeper layers of meaning and story behind this evocotive portraiture, and some of the grounded, cultural wisdom Eric has encountered in his 25 years of immersion in Oaxaca.
The talk is hosted in the intimate and beautiful setting of Living Threads Studio. The is a showroom, gathering space, and gallery showcasing hand-woven, natural-fiber textiles from cashmere to yak, Oaxacan pottery, and the fine art documentary photography featured in Oaxaca Stories in Cloth.
Fine art documentary photographer, author and entrepreneur, Eric founded a cultural a tourism company called Traditions Mexico, has written two books that share insights into traditional knowledge; Fire and Clay, The Art of Oaxacan Pottery, and the award-winning Oaxaca Stories in Cloth, co-created the first ever traveling exhibition focused on the potters of indigenous Mexico, presented a TEDx and helped raise two daughters. Eric currently lives in Santa Fe and is the co-owner of Living Threads Studio.
