The treatment of the behavioral health patient is becoming increasingly more difficult. With declining funds for public treatment options and a patient population who are often non-compliant, emergency department staff and providers are finding themselves on the front line of an escalating behavioral health crises. Healthcare leaders must be aware of all facets of care received by the behavioral health patient. Most important senior healthcare leaders must be aware of the demand on emergency room services that the behavioral patient utilizes and address the full spectrum of care provided to the behavioral health patient. Cost expenditures, the level of staffing, clinical management and coordination of care provided are all important factors for the healthcare executive. This educational session will discuss strategies to improve the clinical care, assessment and timely disposition of behavioral health patients presenting to the hospital’s emergency department and innovative ways to provide high quality of care to behavioral health patients. The program will begin with brief opening remarks of approximately 10 minutes by the moderator, followed by 15-minute presentations by each of the three panelists. The program will conclude with a 30-minute question and-answer period.
