NAUGATUCK, CT — Naugatuck High School teacher Nick Varanelli has been named Teacher of the Year by Naugatuck Public Schools.
In a Facebook post, the district said Varanelli is a U.S. History and American Pop Culture teacher whose fun-loving personality makes him a perennial favorite among students.
"His engaging teaching style pushes students to think deeply about their learning," the post reads. "You can find Mr. Varanelli at the center of any school social event, cheering everyone on. In fact, he'll be pitching for staff at the annual student vs. staff kickball game."
Varanelli was selected by a Teacher of the Year committee for his commitment to student success, according to the district.
"Nick builds strong relationships with students as he innovates teaching and learning with relevant lessons that speak to what matters to his students," the post reads.
Varanelli started the AP Government course at Naugatuck High School, which now attracts about 150 students a year.
He also works to make Naugatuck High a place where everyone feels welcome and valued through the many clubs he advises, according to the district.
