Bay Area Teen Struck By Car, Severely Injured Trying To Cross 101

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A teenage boy was struck by a car and severely injured while trying to cross U.S. Highway 101 in South San Francisco Friday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol. At a little past 7 p.m., the California Highway Patrol received reports of a group of 10 to 15 juveniles who had gathered on the shoulder of the southbound lanes, CHP spokesman Officer Mark Andrews said. Soon after the call came in, four or five of them started trying to cross the highway near the Produce Avenue on-ramp when one of them was struck by a white Chrysler sedan rental car, Andrews said. The driver stopped and cooperated with investigators at the scene and the child, who is between 14 and 15 years old, was taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital with severe injuries to his leg and head. The driver wasn't suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol and no arrests were made. Three lanes of Highway 101 were closed for a time following the collision.
