"All is Flux(us)" is back for another year of Jane's Walk! Get ready for some (very public) fun! You will participate in a series of Fluxus-inspired “compositions,” or spontaneous performances, as Dominic Inouye leads the group down Brady Street to activate its sidewalks and alleys with our bodies and everyday objects. Prepare to discover the street anew and to surprise passersby, who may become part of the performance, too. This “walk” (we’ll be doing ALL kinds of walking!) will certainly test your comfort zones--and that of those around you. If we gave away the “compositions,” they wouldn’t be spontaneous, to participants or the audience--but this might give you a hint: PLEASE BRING AN EVERYDAY OBJECT THAT CAN DOUBLE AS A NOISEMAKER. This is an accessible walk for all participants. The walk will begin at Swing Park at the south end of Brady Street and make its way to the Walgreen's and back. We'll stop spontaneously for various compositions :) WHAT’S FLUXUS? A radical interdisciplinary (anti)art movement of the 1960s and 1970s, Fluxus insisted, with the earlier Dadaists like Tristan Tzara, that “art is not the most precious manifestation of life. Art has not the celestial and universal value that people like to attribute to it. Life is far more interesting.” They rejected the artist as hero or redeemer, the art object as commodity, and blurred the boundaries between the “arts,” calling for a radical purging of such ideologies and the replacement of them with “art in the moment”: compositions of bodies in the present moment, bodies as performance. According to art historian Kristine Stiles, “Fluxus makes ordinary objects ‘anomolous,’ provoking, arousing, and vexing the mind and simultaneously energizing the body to animate novel ways and means to view and experience the world.
