Jane Jacobs was famous for her resistance against highways, seeing their harmful impact on neighborhoods and communities. Unfortunately, highway expansion continues to harm communities right here in Milwaukee. In her honor, we want to draw attention to the proposed I-94 expansion and I-94's harm on Story Hill, Piggsville, & Merrill Park and how that story intersects with the story of race and class in Milwaukee. We will illustrate ways I-94 & WI-175 reinforced segregation and how the proposed expansion will continue this legacy of harm on these historic Milwaukee neighborhoods.
Host: Leland Pan is a resident of Piggsville and former president of Friends of Valley Park, a volunteer group maintaining the neighborhood park and member of Parks People. Friends of Valley Park is also a member of the Fix at Six Coalition pushing back against the 8 lane expansion of I-94. Cassie Steiner works for Sierra Club in Wisconsin and is also a member of the Fix at Six Coalition.
This walk will start at Valley Park (343 N. 42nd St) and end at Valley Inn, 4000 W. Clybourn St (2 blocks from starting location, so almost a loop).
Accessibility info: The entire route should fit on paved sidewalks. However, the route consists of hilly conditions (one major section uphill and one section downhill) and sidewalk pavement in some sections are uneven. The walk is about 1.5 miles.
Weather info: Continue in light rain, reschedule in a thunderstorm.
