Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach adults who regularly interact with young people how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or is in crisis. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.
Objectives:
• Participants will be able to identify the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents.
• Participants will demonstrate how to support youth who display symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying the core five-step ALGEE action plan
• Participants will explore resources available to youth in Mahoning County.
**** This day-long training will include a thirty-minute break for lunch. Lunch will not be provided. Participants will need to make their own lunch arrangements and either bring a packed lunch or order something for delivery. ****
