The Olmstead Decision was the most important Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) victory for people with disabilities. For decades Americans with Disabilities were largely housed in facilities.
On June 22, 1999, the United States Supreme Court ruled, in the case of Olmstead v L.C. & E.W., that states violate the Americans with Disabilities Act when they "unnecessarily" institutionalize people with disabilities.
