Reserve your seat on Visit Springfield's FREE shuttle to Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site in Petersburg, IL! As a part of the History Comes Alive program, Visit Springfield is inviting visitors to register for a free shuttle to Lincoln’s New Salem Historic Site in Petersburg, IL. The shuttle will be available every Saturday morning from, June 4 through August 6. This 24 passenger van will pick visitors up from the north side of Union Square Park, outside of the Historic Union Station building (500 E. Madison Street), located across from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum Parking Garage. The shuttle will depart from the north side of the building at 8:30 AM and return visitors to the same location between 11:30 AM and 11:45 AM. About Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site: Twenty minutes northwest of Springfield, IL lies the reconstructed pioneer village of New Salem. Step back in time nearly 150 years as you walk the where Abraham Lincoln lived and worked as a young man. Here visitors can see where he split rails, work as a store clerk, and served as postmaster. These, among other positions, influenced him to eventually become the Great Emancipator. At this site history comes to life through the costumed interpreters and first person portrayals of the people who lived here more than 150 years ago.
