‘Mural Project Fest’ Invites All to Experience Massive, Open-Air Art Exhibit & Save a One-of-a-Kind Art Space! San Francisco, CA, 5/09/22 – As days and weeks went by after the first mandated Covid-19 quarantine in 2020, artists and makers realized their work and livelihoods were on indefinite hold. Commissions and projects had been canceled, postponed, or not come to fruition. There was no telling how long this pause would go on. In short order, artist and proprietor of The Box Shop, Charles Gadeken, conceived and initiated ‘The Mural Project. Charles commissioned dozens of local artists and muralists to cover the entire business in fabulous art. The goal was two-fold, to engage and offer local artists economic opportunities and beautify and add vibrancy to the space and Bayview Hunters-Point neighborhood. Now, over 100 unique and beautiful murals are installed on the exterior and inner yard of The Box Shop. Murals are painted on 60+ shipping containers that serve as artist studios and storage for creatives. Artworks are created by Bay Area emerging and established street artists including GATS, John Vochatzer, Tracy Piper and Jeremy Novy. The Mural Project Fest will commence on June 11th (noon-6 PM) & 12th (noon-4 PM) at 10 Hunter’s Point Blvd to officially announce and celebrate this open-air, momentous art exhibit. Guided mural and shop tours, live art-making, children’s art activities, live music, and a chance to meet the artists are planned activities for the festivities. Mural tours will take place at 1 and 3 PM each day. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this 100% FREE festival! The Fest will provide Bay Area residents and leaders an opportunity to become familiarized with The Box Shop and its value to the arts and neighboring community and to the general public. This arts and maker space has been serving the San Francisco Hunters Point community, Bay Area artists and makers for almost 20 years. The shop has offered low-cost studio space and access to needed equipment, machinery, tools, and educational opportunities to thousands of individuals. Numerous awe-inspiring and momentous public art projects have been created at the space, such as Gadeken’s illuminated installation, Entwined Meadow in Golden Gate Park, Dana Albany’s Tara Mechani in Patricia’s Green in San Francisco, and Flaming Lotus Girls Serpent Mother at Burning Man. The Box Shop is facing troubling waters with its long-term home as the property owner expressed interest in developing the land into condos. With the lease ending in summer 2021, Gadeken could only renew the space’s home for three more years without an option to extend the lease. In early 2022, Charles kickstarted a capital campaign to purchase their own industrial arts space. This is the time and the only way for the Box Shop to gain a secure and permanent home to serve its community for years to come. Several public events are being planned to give the space more visibility and connection to the Bay Area and its leaders to gain support to preserve this one-of-a-kind creative space and community. Join us on June 11 and 12th for the Mural Fest fun, art, and to [Save] The Box Shop. ### Charles Gadeken is an award-winning industrial artist working in the creative field for over 25 years, whose monumental interactive public artworks reimagine the world post-nature.
