Description

This program sponsored by The Renaissance Society of Sac State is open to the community! Meet on the Sac State Campus, in Del Norte Hall, Room 1004. The program is free, but a small campus parking fee may apply. Details can be found here: https://www.csus.edu/college/social-sciences-interdisciplinary-studies/renaissance-society/seminars.html#our-free-summer-program Have you ever wondered what orchestral conductors really do? What does it take to become a successful conductor? Why is this particular field of music filled with charlatans? What creates the tension between orchestral musicians and the figure up on the podium? What are some of the signals that conductors use (much like baseball coaches on the field) to communicate with the orchestra while performing? How did the history of conducting evolve, and why are conductors (typically) surrounded by an aura of invincibility? Why are there so few female conductors? Join Maestro Leo Eylar, Professor Emeritus at Sacramento State, as he explores these questions and others, with superb video footage and music, including rare footage of early 20th century conductors such as Richard Strauss, Arthur Nikisch, and others. Get ready for a fast-paced, informative, and highly entertaining presentation! Leo Eylar is in his 32nd season as Conductor and Music Director of the California Youth Symphony. Under his direction the orchestra has enhanced its reputation as one of the finest youth orchestras in the world. He studied conducting at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, Austria with Otmar Suitner as the recipient of an International Rotary Foundation Fellowship, and later returned to the U.S. to complete his Master’s degree in conducting at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He is also Professor Emeritus at California State University, Sacramento, having retired in May 2018, after 30 years as the Director of Symphony Orchestra & Opera and teaching composition, theory, history, and orchestral conducting. Eylar is also a composer, having been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1995 for his Rhapsody for Orchestra. His works have been performed in Carnegie Hall, as well as in England, the Netherlands, Japan, Germany, Austria, and South America. Along with Bob Seyfried, Leo Eylar teaches an on campus Classical Music class for the Renaissance Society. Immediately following the presentation, folks will meet at The University Union to enjoy lunch at the Round Table Pizza. No registration required.
