It was the ideal spot for practicing drums and giving private lessons, without the fear of being kicked out of his new apartment. In the summer of 2016, Kevin gained permission to host a small performance at The Wheel. Little did he know … that one gig would become the first of over 90 shows, now known as The Wheel Sessions. Since that first concert, The Wheel Sessions has become somewhat of an underground sensation—hosting many of the best jazz musicians in the Upstate. “I have a mission which I embraced a long time ago,” says Korschgen. “to entertain, enrich, and enlarge the Greenville jazz community.” He goes on to explain that the brand has not changed in 94 sessions. The Wheel Sessions are a jazz performance series hosted in front of an intimate listening audience. In 2019, The Wheel Sessions moved from its original location to a photography studio in the Heddle Industrial Park on Rutherford Road in Greenville. The new space combines the acoustics of a concert hall with the atmosphere of an underground jazz club. “When you come to one, you realize how special it is,” says Korschgen, who by the way, provides complimentary beer and wine at each session. “Most attendees BYOB.” While the shows remain an intimate affair with space for up to eighty people, the quality of music at The Wheel Sessions continues to soar. Major jazz artists such as Jon Faddis, Ignacio Berroa, James Carter and John Fedchock have played the series, not to mention many of the Southeast’s foremost musicians. For more information regarding The Wheel Sessions, please visit www.wheelsessions.com This evening’s performance features a “collective” of stellar musicians, all of whom in addition to having led a Wheel Session, have impressive jazz performance and jazz education credentials. The Quartet features pianist Sean Higgins, bassist Shannon Hoover, drummer Kevin Korschgen, and honorary Wheel Allstar, Columbia’s own trombonist Mitch Butler. *ColaJazz members, be sure to use your discount code.
