Massachusetts Gets Over $59 Million To Support Education, Baby Formula

BOSTON — AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, awarded a total of nearly $60 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the state congressional delegation announced Monday. The funding will support 23 early childhood education, conservation and housing programs across the state. More than $3 million will go to the Massachusetts Service Alliance to help the group fund baby formula grants. "Massachusetts has a strong tradition of young adults stepping up to serve their communities," Congresswoman Lori Trahan said. "This AmeriCorps grant funding will enable many organizations across the Commonwealth to continue promoting local community service." Nineteen grants will support Massachusetts-focused organizations, including Northeastern University in Boston, TerraCorps in Lowell and the Student Conservation Association in Rowe. Four grants will go to national organizations based in Massachusetts, including YouthBuild USA and SAGA Innovations. "I applaud the nearly $60 million in new AmeriCorps funding for Massachusetts," Senator Edward Markey said. "We can and must continue to fight for a fair wage for corps members, who are doing critical work in their communities to respond to our major national and statewide challenges."
