SOUTHBURY, CT — Late in the first set of Thursday's Class L boys volleyball finals, top-seeded Darien trailed Trumbull 22-20, but rallied for five consecutive points to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 match. It was never close again, as the Blue Wave captured the next two sets by double-digit margins to sweep the Eagles 3-0 and earn their second straight championship. Game scores were 25-22, 25-15 and 25-10. Junior co-captain Trevor Herget led the way with 18 kills and 14 digs. Senior co-captain Luke Bradbury had 12 kills and eight digs, sophomore setter Griffith Crouse contributed 33 assists and fellow sophomore Sebastian Petrosz added 12 service points. Trubull, which sought to win its first state title since 2001, was paced by junior Brennan Cutter's 14 kills. Junior Austin Ashby had four kills and three digs, while junior Matthew Cherfane added 11 digs. All but one of the above-mentioned players will be back next season, spelling even more trouble for FCIAC opponents. See video of the championship-winning point below.
