One LI School District Hits Home Run With Historic Day Of Champs

BELLMORE, NY — Student athletics from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School have plenty to be excited about. Three teams combined to make history, as each squad on June 4 clinched the Long Island championship in their respective spring sport. The Mepham High School Pirates defeated East Islip, 8-3, for the Long Island Class A softball title. Senior Hailey Gurerrero went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI. Senior Kylie Persampire a clutch two-out single in the 7th inning, putting the game out of reach. Next up for the Lady Pirates, their first state final four appearance on Saturday morning. Calhoun High School's Colts kept the winning going, taking the Long Island baseball Class A championship against Rocky Point. Brooks Montalbano starred with the bat, belting a two-run home run in the 8-3 conquest. Brian Chin allowed three hits and struck out four. The Colts, who finished the regular season at 18-1, face Binghamton on Saturday in a semifinal round. The Bellmore-Merrick Chargers defeated Walt Whitman, 30-20 and winning the first LongIsland championship for girls' flag football. Sophia LaSpina threw three touchdown passes in the victory. "Saturday, June 4, will forever be remembered as one of the greatest athletic days inBellmore-Merrick history," Superintendent of Schools Michael Harrington said. "We areso proud of our student-athletes and coaches who have earned the prestigious title of LongIsland Champions and thankful for the incredible fans who came out to support them."
