Description

NAPERVILLE, IL — Crews will use air and smoke to test the sanitary sewer system in Naperville for leaks starting June 20. The tests pump air and nontoxic smoke into sewer lines and crews watch to see if smoke comes up out of the ground. This indicates a leak or defect that can cause backups and other problems with sanitary sewer systems. Residents may also see smoke emerging from the sewer vent stack that's on the roof of some buildings. Crews will post cards on the doors of homes that will be affected by the tests. Although the smoke is nontoxic and the city says it is harmless, officials are advising those with respiratory issues to consider leaving the area during testing. Naperville's sanitary sewer system smoke tests are expected to wrap up before November, if weather permits.
