Description

ELMHURST, IL – The same suspect appears to have used the same scam at a third Elmhurst business, police reports indicate. About 6 p.m. May 31, a man entered Jimmy John's, 696 W. North Ave., and told an employee he knew the owner, according to a police report. He requested money, saying his niece was in the hospital, police said. The employee gave the suspect money, and the man left the store, the report said. The incident wasn't reported until Tuesday, a week later. This was after Patch's second story about the scammer appeared. The description of the man was largely similar to a May 29 incident at Get Bazzy, 152 N. York St. He was described as white, balding, 45 to 50 years old, 5-foot-10, 210 pounds, clean-shaven, having an average build and having a tattoo on his left forearm. At Get Bazzy, the suspect had a similar story. He said he knew the business owner and that he needed cash for a tow truck, according to a police report. The clerk handed the man money from the register, but later learned the man's story was a scam, police said. The other incident was Sunday at Buffalo Wild Wings, 149 N. York St., which is across the street from Get Bazzy. Shortly before midnight at Buffalo Wild Wings, he tried to deceive an employee into giving him money, but the employee refused to comply. Police did not detail the man's story in this case. In the Buffalo Wild Wings case, police gave a more basic description, saying the man was white and bald.
