VERNON, AL — Circuit Judge Sam Junkin this week sentenced a Vernon man to 15 years in prison for felony elder abuse, after he was accused and found guilty of assaulting a 70-year-old woman in July 2020. According to District Attorney Andy Hamlin, Terrance Rashaun Moore, 30, did not know the woman he assaulted and had been parked in front of her house for about half an hour the evening of the encounter. "He became angry when she walked outside to write down hit license tag number, grabbing her arm and causing serious physical injury," Hamlin said. "This defendant attacked a vulnerable person. I cannot think of a more cowardly act than attacking an elderly woman. I hope this verdict and sentence send a strong message that this behavior will not be tolerated." A trial against Moore was held in March, where a jury found him guilty of first-degree abuse, which is a Class A felony in the state of Alabama. "I would also be remiss if I didn't mention the role that the victim's family and friends played in getting this conviction," Hamlin said.
