Seasonal Farmworker Position at Working Theory Farm -- $20/hr + Subsidized housing Seasonal, Part time, July - September, Friday - Sunday, 12-15 hrs/week Includes subsidized housing, 1 bed, 1 bath home for $1200 a month not including utilities Interviews and hiring decisions made ASAP. Ideal start date July 1, 2022 Located near Century Blvd and TV Highway in South Hillsboro --.6 miles (11 minute walk) from #57 bus line, and 3.1 miles (22 minute bike ride) from the Orenco Station MAX. At Working Theory Farm our mission is to empower youth through the shared work of farming to grow food for partner organizations who distribute this food to families in need. Through growing vegetables and raising livestock on our organic farm, we provide alternative education and avenues of employment to youth who have barriers to thriving within traditional systems while teaching personal responsibility, social responsibility, and professional skills. In order to carry out this mission, our small team is in need of a supporting staff member who will cover weekend chores and serve as a second facilitator to our Friday Farm to Fork program. Tentative Daily Chore Schedule: AM: Feeding and watering pigs (at the beginning of the season), feeding and watering chickens, moving chicken coops to fresh pasture, egg collection, opening high tunnels & propagation house, plant watering PM: Closing up high tunnels and propagation house, removing feed from chicken coops Send a resumé and a few paragraphs that help us understand who you are and why you want to be doing this work with us (because we recognize that not everything comes through on a resumé) to [email protected]. Skills, Experience, Qualities, and Capabilities Experience in physical labor Experience working with youth Commitment to the well-being of our local community here in Washington County Reliability, empathy, compassion, and excellent listening, communication, and interpersonal skills. Hardworking, motivated, excited to try new things Physical Requirements and Environmental Considerations Ability to lift and carry 50lbs over short distances, walk over rough ground, bend at the waist, and squat repeatedly throughout the course of a full workday. Each employee is encouraged to listen to and take care of their bodies as needed - for example taking water and stretch breaks. However the unavoidable reality of farming is that it’s very physically demanding work. Willingness and ability to work in all weather conditions -- through rain and cold in the spring and fall, and in hot weather in the summer. Appropriate gear helps to lessen any possible discomfort -- We have boots and gloves available for use in a variety of sizes, and can support employees in acquiring the other necessary equipment (raincoat and pants, durable warm clothing, sun hat, etc.) at a low cost. Description of day-to-day work : Youth facilitation -- As a community resource and educational space, we host many groups during the course of a season. On Fridays, youth in the juvenile justice system come to the farm to complete course credits or community service hours as part of the Farm to Fork program from 10am till 2pm. Candidates should be comfortable relating to such youth, while cultivating a positive, collaborative, and inclusive environment. The candidates primary responsibility will be in the realm of co-facilitation of the farm work while connecting with young people and creating spaces for vulnerability, growth, and real talk. Fri - Sun chore responsibilities - Candidates will also be responsible for various farm chores during the weekend which include feeding and watering the animals, egg collection, moving chicken coops to fresh pasture daily, and taking care of any young plants in the propagation house. www.workingtheoryfarm.org
