Man Gets Almost 20 Years In Prison After Attempted 2016 Carjacking

MILWAUKEE, WI — A Milwaukee man was sentenced to almost 20 years in federal prison on Tuesday after authorities said he shot a man during an attempted carjacking in 2016, the United States Department of Justice announced Wednesday in a news release. Jack A. Clayborne was sentenced to 19½ years in prison and 60 months of supervised release for his role in the shooting, said U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin Richard G. Frohling. A jury convicted Clayborne of attempted carjacking, discharging a firearm in furtherance of the attempted carjacking, and possession of ammunition by a felon. Clayborne and another gunman tried to carjack a man who had just backed his car into his garage, Frohling said. According to evidence presented at trial, Clayborne walked up to the garage and shot the man through both of his legs with a handgun. It happened in the 2500 block of West Hampton Avenue one evening in July 2016, according to the federal criminal complaint against Clayborne. As the man was parking his Cadillac Escalade in his garage, located off an alley, two people confronted him with guns, the complaint said. The man who was being carjacked shot back and hit one of the men, Eric Booker, who was also convicted by a jury in 2017, according to the DOJ. The gun used by the man who was being carjacked was legally owned, the DOJ said. "Violent crimes like carjackings and armed robberies present an unacceptable threat to the safety and security of our communities," Frohling said in a statement. "In this case, Clayborne not only brazenly attempted an armed carjacking but also was willing to pull the trigger — and shoot the victim — just to try to take the car." The Milwaukee Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case, the DOJ said.
