Man Ejected From Boat Near Fire Island Rescued By Good Samaritan

FIRE ISLAND, NY — An Islip man was rescued by a good Samaritan and Suffolk County police on Wednesday night after he was ejected from his boat near Fire Island, officials said. Michael Greene, 34, was driving a 25-foot Grady-White boat at about 5:58 p.m. when he was believed to have suffered a medical emergency and crashed into the Fire Island Pines bulkhead, police said. He was then ejected from the vessel, police said. A good Samaritan jumped into the water and kept Greene afloat until Suffolk County Marine Bureau Officers Joseph Riviello and Anton Fanelli arrived on Marine Juliette, police said. The officers immediately jumped into the water and started rendering first aid to Greene, police said. A third Marine Bureau officer, Richard Berni, jumped from Marine Kilo to Greene's boat, which was unoccupied and traveling in circles, police said. Officer Berni was able to switch the boat into neutral and get back to Marine Kilo before the Grady-White sank. Greene was taken on Marine Juliette to Timber Point Marina. He was transferred to a Suffolk County Police helicopter and taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said. There were no other passengers on the boat and no other injuries, police said.
