Join Case Status, legal influencers, and the community for coffee, networking, and discussion on some of the exciting things happening in the legal industry today. Andy will explore topics that are relevant to modern law firms with Michael (Mick) Gunter, the General Manager at Daggett Shuler in Winston Salem, NC. Mick began his career in the US Marine Corps as an Artillery Officer, where he gained experience in operations and logistics, reaching the rank of Captain. After the military Mick developed a passion for technology that led to several roles in IT consulting and ultimately Director of Information Systems at Blue Rhino Corporation where he also earned his MBA from Duke University. In 2004 Mick was one of four founders of what became Primo Water Corporation, serving as both CIO & COO, building out quality control, routing, and distribution systems for national direct-to-store delivery scaling from zero to over 10,000 retail outlets nationwide. Teamwork and rapidly iterating on process systems was critical to Primo Water’s ability to scale from 4 to over 1,000 employees & contractors. In 2010 Primo Water was listed on the NASDAQ (PRMW). In 2012, Mick led the turnaround of a small publicly-traded company as interim CEO where he recruited a new CFO, shut down a non-performing business unit, and set the course for the company to have 12+ profitable quarters after his departure. In 2013 Mick joined Brock; Scott PLLC in a newly created Chief Operating Officer role. Brock; Scott grew rapidly during the financial crisis of 2008-2010 and was practicing in 7 states with over 100 attorneys and 1,200 staff & contractors. Mick led the development of a non-attorney management team, established standards, and developed systems to meet emerging banking regulation/compliance requirements and raise operational consistency. Over the ensuing decade revenue per employee doubled and the firm expanded operations to 17 states. Across several industries, in organizations of 25-2,500+ employees, the combination of two elements has repeatedly led to success. First, the team of people working together must be cohesive and motivated by a common cause. Second, leverage technology to create transparency, measurement, and iterate as fast as you can based on those observations. Excellence is a journey without an endpoint.
