Description

“On January 30th, 2013, the City of Memphis became the 500th jurisdiction in the United States to adopt a Complete Streets policy, taking its place as a prominent community in the national movement to reclaim streets for people, reexamine the public realm, and challenge some antiquated perceptions about transportation…..Realization of this vision depends on the routine application of Complete Streets principles in decision making, the establishment of performance metrics and evaluation, and a commitment to a coordinated project delivery process.” Is this vision being achieved? Join us for a talk about where urban planning in Memphis stands today. Our panelists will discuss the progress to date and the challenges of implementing street taming and other complete streets improvements to Union and Summer Avenues in line with Memphis 3.0, the Innovation Corridor, the Summer Avenue plan and more. From Downtown to Midtown to East Memphis, walk-ups versus drive-throughs, bikes versus cars, see how our city's street improvement plans work with or against proposed private developments. And learn how we can stay engaged in the process.
